post Excalibur

Excalibur is a Marvel Comics superhero group, an offshoot of the X-Men, usually based in the United Kingdom. Conceived by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Alan

Davis, the original Excalibur first appeared in Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn (1987)

The first Excalibur consisted of the English superhero Captain Britain, his lover Meggan and several onetime members of the X-Men and related mutant teams. An eponymous series

featuring the team lasted from 1988 until 1998. Originally, it was a wacky series involving cross-dimensional travel that incorporated as many elements of Captain Britain’s mythos

as it did the X-Men’s. It became a more typical X-Book in later years.

Captain Britain recently reformed Excalibur to defend London in a series entitled New Excalibur, which debuted in 2005.

post Ms. Marvel (V1 and V2)

Carol Danvers is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. She first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968). Danvers’ superhero alias is currently Ms. Marvel; in the past she has also gone by the names Binary and Warbird.
Ms. Marvel has a wide array of superhuman powers. Initially they included superhuman strength, endurance, formidable resistance to physical injury, the ability to fly, and a precognitive sense.

When she became Binary, she could manipulate every form of energy in the electromagnetic spectrum on a cosmic level, had vastly increased strength, and could fly at speeds exceeding light. After her link to the white hole from which she drew her powers was severed, she lost the bulk of her cosmic powers, but still retained her energy manipulation powers on a smaller scale. In addition to her original powers of superhuman strength, injury resistance, and flight, Ms. Marvel has the ability to absorb and manipulate photonic energy. She can focus her photonic powers into explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. These blasts are comparable in power to her fellow Avenger Iron Man’s repulsor rays. By focusing her powers outward in all directions, she can surround herself with an energy aura which deflects most attacks. She also has some gravitational powers which allow her to boost her already tremendous strength by absorbing the gravitational forces around her. She has also demonstrated the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection. On at least one occasion, Binary was able to use her power to force open a Shi’ar Stargate, a feat which only hosts of the Phoenix Force and Firestar have managed before or since.

post Deadshot DC comics

Deadshot (real name Floyd Lawton), is a fictional character in the DC Universe.

He is a hired assassin and quite possibly the greatest marksman in the world, reputed to never miss (he shares this catchphrase with the Marvel Comics character Bullseye). He is capable of using a large variety of weapons, but prefers using a pair of silenced, wrist-mounted Colt revolvers. He initially appeared in Gotham City as a new crimefighter, but was revealed to be an enemy of Batman when he attempted to replace the crime fighter. When this plan failed, he attempted to become king of Gotham’s Underworld. Batman and Commissioner Gordon publicly exposed his plot, and Lawton went to jail.

After serving his term, Deadshot began hiring his services out as an assassin, changing his costume from the top coat and tails he previously wore to his now more familiar red jumpsuit and distinctive metal face plate with a targeting device on the right side. He has been a major figure in the Suicide Squad in its latest two incarnations, where his skills as a marksman and his absence of care for human life served to greatly further the group’s objectives. During a hiatus from the Squad (in a four issue miniseries from 1988), his son was abducted, raped, and killed by a pedophile, whom Deadshot later took revenge upon. Probably his most peculiar trait is a great desire to die in a spectacular fashion, this being his primary motivation for joining the Squad. He feels he has no reason to continue living, and, while he does not want to commit suicide, he simply does not care if he dies. Various reasons have been cited for this, but the most common thread in them is his parents’ peculiar hatred for one another, so much so that Lawton’s mother tried to hire both her sons to kill their father.

A second miniseries featuring Deadshot recently concluded, in which Deadshot found out that he’d had a daughter who was being raised in a crime filled area of Star City. Lawton decided to do right by this daughter, and embarked on a lethal war on the local gangs that plagued the area. The series ends with Deadshot faking his death having realized a normal life isn’t for him, but having mostly cleared up the area and having convinced Green Arrow to patrol it more regularly.

post Groo the Wanderer

June 6th, 2006

Groo the Wanderer (a parody of the Robert E. Howard character Conan the Barbarian) is a fantasy era large-nosed buffoon who constantly misunderstands his surroundings, and, despite his generally good intentions, causes mass destruction wherever he goes. Most of his adventures end with him walking away oblivious to the mayhem he has wrought, or fleeing an angry mob. Groo occasionally meets with respect and good fortune, but it does not last. Businesses, towns, civilizations and cultures have all been unwittingly destroyed by Groo. Such is Groo’s incompetence that so much as stepping onto a ship will cause it to sink.

The only thing that has kept Groo alive through all of his adventures is his excellent swordsmanship. Groo has slain entire armies on his own, with nothing more than his swords. Groo loves these battles - or “frays”, as he calls them - and often charges into the melee with a cry of “Now Groo does what Groo does best!” So great is his love for battle that Groo seldom bothers to consider which side he is fighting for, and goes on to slay soldiers from either side. post Hawkworld

May 31st, 2006

Hawkworld was a comic book from DC Comics that explored the origins of the Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkwoman. There was a three issue limited series by Timothy Truman in 1989, which was followed by a 32 issue series (plus 3 annuals) by John Ostrander, published from 1990 to 1993. Katar Hol and Shayera Thal were rebooted in the prestige format limited series. In this new version, Hol was a young police officer on the planet Thanagar, and a child of a privileged family. But his homeworld had the policy to conquer and mine other worlds for their resources to maintain its high standard of living, and Hol realized that this was wrong. He rebelled against the system, and was sent into exile. However, 10 years later, he escaped and got the help of Shayera Thal, a young officer from a lower class of society, to uncover and defeat the renegade police captain Byth. As a result, Hol was reinstated in the Wingmen Force and given a new partner, Thal. Along with its contemporaries (The Man of Steel, Batman: Year One and so forth), Hawkworld was intended to revise DC Universe continuity for the post-Crisis continuity. However, DC editors decided that it was not just an origin story; rather, it was occurring in the present, concurrently with the rest of DC’s output. This meant that the Hawks’ entire history from the Silver Age of Comic Books onwards had to be disregarded, including their memberships in the Justice League. This began a series of nonstop retcons to the Hawkman characters that ended with the original Golden Age Hawkman returning in the pages of JSA.
