I @#$*ing hate the vague synopses Marvel Comics posts on its web site. Makes it a pain in the butt to describe their comics to other people. Jamie Madrox (Multiple Man) takes center stage in this five-part miniseries written by the unparalleled Peter David. The comics are well-drawn in a film noir-esque style that fits with the grittiness of the story, but the real polish is in the dialogue. Mr. David is at his best when combining dark themes with outrageous dialogue - and this is certainly one of his best. If you’ve ever read his work in The Incredible Hulk or X-Factor, or been lucky enough to pick up one of his books (Knight Life and Apropos of Nothing are two of the best fantasy novels written in a very, very long time) than you’ll certainly enjoy this series. Voltron

Thanks to Vardan from ProjectW, we bring you: Voltron.

“For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 1980’s, Voltron is one of the very first Japanese anime series to be butchered…excuse me, I mean adapted…to the American market. Much like Robotech, a similar hack job, two or three anime series were crammed together and redubbed in English in order to amuse and stupefy children in Saturday mornings so their parents could sleep in. Also like Robotech, it was wildly successful.

Unlike the vast majority of knock-offs that came after it, it was surprisingly good.

The plot (and stop me if you’ve heard this before; it seems to be a recurring theme in anime) is simple: a bunch of young people control vehicles which combine into a giant robot and use the robot to defend their home planet. In the cartoon/anime series, the action was self-contained and the issue resolved at the end of each 22-minute episode. Image Comics (and later, Devil’s Due) do a terrific job adding “meat” to this somewhat simplistic story. Like the new Transformers, Infiltration series, the artwork is clean and the colors vivid and the storyline, while familiar to those who have seen the series, is refreshing.

If you liked this show as a kid…read the comic. I guarantee you’ll like what’s been done to it. If you’ve never heard of Voltron before…it’s all right; nobody’s perfect. Read the comic. :)” Vardan
