Gotham, circa 2039: welcome to the future. Psychic police, satellite surveillance and a completely intrusive government ensure that personal privacy is a thing of the past. When a government agent is murdered in Gotham, a contingent of top Washington operatives is despatched to find the killer. Launching his own investigation, GCPD cop Jim Gordon - grandson of the Commissioner - discovers that the man wanted for the murder shouldn’t even exist; after all, surely the Batman is dead! From the febrile, visionary mind of writer/artist Paul Pope (THB, 100 per cent), with colour assists by Jose Villarubia (Promethea), comes an action-packed mystery…one hundred years in the making!

Batman: Son of the Demon

Batman: Son of the Demon was a graphic novel by Jerry Bingham and Mike W. Barr published in 1987 by DC Comics.

It was somewhat considered to be a retroactive Elseworlds story due to several criticisms, most notably in character, until it was announced that Grant Morrison would be following up the events of the story in 2006, in the 4-issue story “Batman & Son“.

The story centers on the eco-terrorist and head of the League of Assassins, Ra’s Al Ghul aiding Batman in his quest to solve the murder of one of Gotham City’s most prominent scientists. Ra’s al Ghul and Batman turn out to be searching for the same man, the terrorist known as Qayin. Qayin is a rogue assassin who had murdered Ra’s Al Ghul’s wife, mother to his favorite daughter and heir-apparent, Talia. Batman has shared a stormy, on-again, off-again romance with Talia for many years, despite his ideological conflict with Ra’s. During the course of the story line, Batman has time to properly romance and marry Talia (the service is performed by Ra’s). Talia soon becomes pregnant, and the prospect of a family has a profound effect on Batman’s demeanor, making him more risk-adverse and softening his typically grim outlook.

Batman: The Killing Joke is a one-shot superhero comic book written by Alan Moore and drawn by Brian Bolland, published by DC Comics in 1988.
The plot revolves around a largely psychological battle between Batman and his longtime foe, the Joker, who has escaped from Arkham Asylum. The Joker intends to drive James Gordon, the Police Commissioner of Gotham City, insane, in order to prove that the most upstanding citizen is capable of going mad after having “one bad day.” Along the way, the Joker has flashbacks to his early life, gradually explaining his origin.

Batman: The Man Who Laughs is a one-shot graphic novel by Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke, released in February 2005, and intended as a sequel to Batman: Year One. It tells the story of Batman’s first encounter with The Joker in post-Crisis continuity. The book is similar in format and cover typography to the famous 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke. The title is a reference to the movie The Man Who Laughs, based on the book of the same name by Victor Hugo, which was an inspiration for The Joker. The storyline is based on the Joker’s original introduction in Batman #1 (1940). The story Images in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #50 (Sept 1993) was also based on this graphic novel, tying it into continuity as Batman’s second encounter with The Joker.

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth is a graphic novel written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dave McKean. It was originally published in the United States, in both hardcover and softcover editions, by DC Comics in 1989. The subtitle is taken from line 55 of the poem “Church Going”, by Philip Larkin.

The book was one of DC Comics first original graphic novels to feature Batman and when released in 1989, it sold so well it quickly became DC’s best selling original graphic novel, a title it held for many years.

The book is notable for both McKean’s typical blend of painting, collage, and ink drawings and Morrison’s exploration of various mystic ideas, including the symbiosis between Batman and the criminals he captured and recaptured. Various threads of symbolism used by Morrison include the works of Lewis Carroll, the Christian Mystery Plays, the psychology of Carl Jung and the works of Joseph Campbell.
