“The Walking Dead is, at first glance, perhaps just another product in the latest line of zombie stories, be they in film or comics. But, like any good zombie story, or even any good horror story, looks can be deceiving.
Kirkman takes a few cues from some of the most well-known zombie films, most notably George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. Like Boyle’s film, the first few chapters of The Walking Dead focuses on a single character, Rick, a policeman shot in the line of duty, who wakes up from a coma to find the world is much different than when he left it.
After learning about what has happened while he was in his coma, Rick heads for his home only to find his wife and son missing. Hoping for the best, he begins a long trip to Atlanta, desperately clinging to the idea that his wife and son are with her relatives there. Finding the city overrun with zombies, Rick meets up with a band of people outside the city limits, including his former partner, his wife, and his son.
The real driving force of The Walking Dead is Tony Moore’s art. Rick’s first zombie sighting upon waking up in the hospital is as terrifying as anything to come along in horror cinema in recent years, if not more. His characters, specifically the zombies, seem to move inside their perspective panels.
In fact, it’s Moore’s pencils that carry the entire first part of the collection. Until Rick meets up with his fellow survivors, Kirkman’s script feels very much like a half-hearted effort to imitate what’s come before instead of the love letter to the zombie/horror genre that it becomes in the later chapters.
The best zombie stories, be they film, comic or book, have a deeper meaning than to just scare us. For example, Romero’s Dawn of the Dead serves as both a simple “scary movie” and one man’s vision of the dangers of a consumer-minded nature. With that in mind, Kirkman and Moore have crafted a story that is equal parts fright-fest and survival story.
The characters feel sympathetic as well as terrifying in that middle-America- militia-extremist way. If the zombies represent the new norm, then this small group of gun-toting men and women are the self-chosen outcasts, striving to preserve a way of life they deemed better. When Rick begins to teach his son how to use a firearm it seems very necessary, and very alarming.
In the best horror stories, the scariest things are the humans, not the monsters. Everyone knows what the monsters are after; we all know what they’re going to do. It’s the reactions of people like ourselves that really scare us. Would we fall while running from a would-be killer? Could we drive a wooden stake through the heart of a family member who’s now a vampire? Those are the thoughts that keep us up at night, and The Walking Dead provides more than its fair share of them.
Despite its predictable, yet beautifully rendered opening, The Walking Dead is a step in the right direction for one of comics most overlooked fields. It’s intelligent as well as creepy, and is as much a character study as it is a horror story. By the books end you begin to question if the title refers to the zombies or the humans.”

Just wanted to say, if anyone hasnt read this series they better do it. Zombie fan or not, this is a great series becase it dives deep into the human soul and the light and darkness that hides within it. I had this series up until #28 before it was posted here and easily read through all 28 issues in one sitting, I still find myself jonesin’ for the next everytime you post one on this site. I fell off buying them a few months ago w/ #12 & if i’d known that the prison was coming i would have certainly been more diligent in catching up & getting them as released. Now i need them all in hardcover! Thanks for posting these, it reassured me that Kirkman was on point w/ the series & keeping up the excellent work.

A .cbr file is just a .rar file with a renamed extension.
A .cbz file is just a .zip file with a renamed extension.
So, you can use those applications to unzip/unrar the files into the individual page, then look at through any image (jpeg usually, sometimes gif or png) viewer.
Alternately, there are numerous “comic book reader” apps available (do a Google search; I use the unzip method myself).

Thanks for this great site, and to the legends who uploaded the last two issues! Cheers, folks! Though I can’t say I find TWD quite as good as it started out, it is IMO miles ahead of 90% of other comics out there, and always a fantastic read (reminds me a lot of the non-zombie 70’s UK series ‘Survivors’ in many ways). I buy all the trades, but the comics are very hard to find here and getting back issues from overseas cost insane prices and take ages… I really appreciate this site for not only helping me stay up to date, but in getting me into buying this book in the first place!

I have to say… 48 was actually rather disappointing for me. Too many deaths without pause or meaning. That may have BEEN the point, but apart from one (the really important/”biggest” death), the rest felt irrelevant and glossed over. I’d have rather had them spread out more over the past four issues or so, for greater impact than this feeling of “I’ve changed the direction I want to take the story”… with a virtual one-issue ‘reset button’ in one issue. On the upside, glad to see the back of the prison at last!

Now I admit I got behind on my posting of links - I don’t have them myself yet - but other people have been providing them (and thanks again to the folks filling in the gaps). Why do you people think that 50 will be the end? I remember reading (In one of the first few comics) that the reason for the series is to show what happens after “The movie ends”. He said he plans to make it go as long as he possibly can, so I doubt it’s going to end before around 200 issues.

Kirkman has entered a highly professional level of trying to predict extreme emotional trauma onto the lead character. I greatly anticipate the next issue, to see how well Kirkman will portray Rick’s emotional state and reasonable self-control.

Lol, no of course not. The distribution method of digital media in the form of file-sharing, led me to discovering “The Walking Dead”.

Comics, in general, come in millions. 90% of them have no useful meaning other than temporary amusement. Walking Dead is not like that.

I sent a detailed e-mail, explaining how this in-direct method of file-sharing is helping buffer junk and expose meaningful content to consumers. The good stuff is eventually bought when the opportunity comes, while the junk gets raped by piracy. Un-intentional customers are created; I see, I download, I like, I’ll buy.

I also found Walking Dead on the net and it took me a while to learn to appreciate it. Kirkman is well aware of his media circulating in file-sharing distribution. Lets not insult his intelligence here. How hard is it to type in google: “Walking Dead” rapidshare.com ? lots of powerful links will pop up. I’m sure his people are well aware of it.

But it is a well known fact, that these sites are not under immediate harms way, because the marketing people down at Image (and others), are aware the in-direct publicity this brings them. It’s complicated to explain, and like “DAMN YOU” said - this is getting way too far. I regret starting this topic in the first place. I learned my lesson.

Love that this issue feels so much like the early ones: out on the road with danger around every corner. While I hope Rick isn’t for the chop yet, and still don’t like Carl, I’m very glad to see the back of the ’static’ nature of the prison and the story moving again. Great issue… but yes, a bit ’short’ considering how long we have to wait.

That wound he received a while back from a bullet. Did you see the width of that scar? It looked a lot more like a slash. Perhaps the bullet was lodged in his stomach and the doctor had to perform a section to get it out. Otherwise, you could be looking at a possible pact between the doctor and Rick - that he was mangled in the stomach by a zombie at some point in issue 44.

Zmaj, Kirkman read your mind! Just read the inside cover of #49 for a list of recent dead from the past couple of issues.

Jach, I love Deadworld, especially the early issues. I own almost every issue (including the cool alt. covers) and also own the CD-ROM release from Eagle (which totally sucks, IMO), but finding the book to download has proved pretty tricky. Somewhere I have a whole bunch of them that I downloaded from torrents a long time ago (to save wear and tear on my actual issues, I like cbrs of the comics I own). If you’re interested, I’m happy to have a search for them, if you can figure out a way for me to share them with ya (or if the owner of this site is interested in posting them here).

I’d be very happy to share them, since I think Deadworld is FAR too good to fade into obscurity… I only discovered it accidentally after a ‘blind’ ebay buy (and honestly, I can’t condone the horrid job done on the Eagle Media DVD… an incomplete, unextractable mess of PDFs that was very disappointing).
