Spiderman - Kingpin November 5, 2006

Posted by Blue Apple in : Blue Apple, Comics, Spiderman ,

The Kingpin is a Marvel Comics villain who has battled many Marvel crime-fighters, most often The Punisher, Spider-Man, and Daredevil. He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #50

A titanic figure with an ever-present cigar and diamond-studded cane, the Kingpin is the cold-blooded leader of the New York mafia, although his army of lawyers maintain his image as a legitimate businessman. The character played a prominent role in the Daredevil stories of the late 1970s and early 1980s written by Frank Miller, and the two have had a bitter, violent feud ever since.

The Kingpin also appeared in the 1990s-era Spider-Man animated series and in the 2003 Daredevil film, where he was played by Michael Clarke Duncan, who reprised his role in a subsequent Spider-Man animated series.

Blame v01-10 (c01-66) (complete)
Tsutomu Nihei

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLAME%21
“Killy, a silent loner posessing an incredibly powerful weapon known as a Gravitational Beam Emitter, wanders a vast technological world known as the Megastructure. He is searching for Net Terminal Genes, a (possibly) extinct genetic marker that allows humans access to the Netsphere. The Megastructure is an endless vertical space of walls, stairways and caverns, inhabited by scattered human and transhuman tribes as well as hostile cyborgs known as Silicon Creatures. The Net Terminal Genes appear to be the key to halting the unhindered, chaotic expansion of the Megastructure, as well as a way of stopping the murderous horde known as the Safeguard from destroying all humanity.
Along the way, Killy meets and joins forces with a resourceful engineer named Cibo and a tribe of human warriors called the Electro-Fishers. They are pursued by the Safeguard, who view any human without Net Terminal Genes as a threat to be extinguished on sight.”

Cage November 5, 2006

From Meho Krljic @ ProjectW

Cage 1-5
Brian Azzarello and RICHARD CORBEN !?!?

“So, Luke Cage has always been my secret love when it comes to Marvel superheroes. Probably because he was one of the first mainstream superheroes to be of African origin and carry with him all the genre stereotypes ’70s associated with African Americans, and yet be written with love and passion and coming out irresistably likeable. So, a couple of years back, when Marvel were riding the top of the ‘fukc CCA’ wave, their ‘mature’ imprint MAX was getting more and more comics soaked in blood and peppered with swear words. What better environment than to pair writer Brian Azzarello and artist Richard Corben, both known for their unashamed explorations/ exploitations of darker topics, violence and sex. Cage, a five-issue miniseries was actually criticised rather harshly across the Internet for actually taking a loveable (=carboard-cutout) character from the seventies and updating it with the more current ghetto-violence/ corruption/ politics/ crime setting and story. Some people apparently felt like their childhood just got raped.

Then again, if cheerful escapism is your only motivation for picking up a comic, you’re probably not reading this thread here. MAX imprint was clearly labeled as adult oriented and the topics/ language/ setting/ art were appropriately so. And, not that darker setting, harsh language and violence necessarrilly make for better or even more mature comics, but Cage is an unsettling, satisfying neo-noir piece of fiction featuring tough-as-nails and colder-than-arctic main caracter, a lot of screwed up ghetto youth, some proper, straight-up G’s, some shady political types and some sensual women. Azzarello’s language is as sharp and lively as ever and Corben’s art is as sick and in-your-face as ever. As I said, a lot of people actually consider this comic to be confusing, exploitative and simply not good, but it did it for me. Hopefully it does it for you too.

Man! Azarello and Corben!!! They could only improve on this by getting Ennis to do the dialogue!  -[Axe]
**EDIT: I take it back; Azzarello got the hang of the slang. (Ain’t no thang but a chicken wang)…
It’s a friggin’ Yojimbo story in the hood! I kept expecting Mifune to step out of the bar instead of Cage. READ THIS SERIES.
