Samurai Cat 1-2 (of 3)
Mark E. Rogers
Epic Comics

Samurai Cat (aka Miaowara Tomokato) is the main character in a series of books by Mark E. Rogers. In addition to the detailed writing, almost every page in each book has a picture painted by Rogers, depicting the events described on that page. Each chapter is a bizarre parody of some historical or pop culture event, but it is always treated as entirely serious. For example, no one finds it at all unusual that Tomokato is a walking, talking, sword wielding cat.
The basic premise of the story is that Japan’s greatest warrior Tomokato is out for revenge after his master Nobunaga is killed. The group that led the attack on Nobunaga’s castle was made up of characters from all sorts of places, so Tomokato travels all over the Earth and beyond to seek his vengeance (from Japan to Camelot to Valhalla to Mars, to name just a few) in the most violent ways possible involving the deaths of hundreds of beings.
In the first book, The Adventures of Samurai Cat, Rogers skewers J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu, Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian and Norse mythology.
With the second book, entitled, More Adventures of Samurai Cat, Rogers goes after the movies (while still referencing pulp literature), satirizing Indiana Jones, and fusing it with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round in the search for the Holy Spad (a biplane armed with two 15 mm machineguns and God’s own special effects, complete with 3D glasses for safe viewing). From there Tomokato and Shiro travel to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Martian Barsoom. Rogers saves his most biting humor for the last chapter which takes on Star Wars.

Icaro v1-2 (c01-12)
Writer: Moebius (aka. Jean Giraud)
Artist: Jiro Taniguchi

East meets West. A collaboration of two masters. Icaro is collaboration between two powerhouses– one French, the other Japanese. It’s an English translation of a French text, illustrated by a Japanese artist.
“You’ll want to read the two-volume set of Icaro twice. The first time through, you’ll find yourself pulled into the story of a boy trying to escape and discover the freedom that his power of flight has denied him all these years. You’ll thrill to his movements across the page, and turn each page quicker and quicker as the tension grows. And then you’ll read it a second time once you’ve reached the conclusion, to really appreciate every line that Taniguchi drew. This is an absolutely beautiful piece of art, and I’m thrilled that it’s now available in English. Something this beautiful should be seen by all.” - Read About Comics articly by Greg McElhatton
Icaro is a young man blessed with the fantastic ability of flight. But his home, a top secret laboratory complex, is in reality a high-tech prison and Icaro is the guinea pig it was created to study. But in the staff of the laboratory is one person who rebels at the sinister plans for Icaro. Yukiko is a young woman who is willing to risk her life to free the boy who has never known freedom. Icaro’s fight to be free and Yukiko’s scarifice to aid him in his quest make this one of the most inspiring manga stories and one of the first significant original manga colloborations between East and West. Manga master Jiro Taniguchi and French comics superstar, Moebius, have produced an outstanding tale of cyberpunk adventure which earned them a 2004 Harvey Award nomination for Best American Edition of Foreign Material.

The artwork in this has just RIDICULOUS detail! It reminds me a lot of Akira (art-wise…and also a little story-wise, come to think of it…).
Check it out; good stuff!  -[Axe]

Area 88 v1-2 (c01-29) (complete)
Kaoru Shintani
Eclipse

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_88
Area 88 is a Japanese manga series by Kaoru Shintani serialized between 1979 and 1986. The story is about a young pilot named Shin Kazama and his experiences at Area 88, a mercenary air force base secluded in the desert of a war torn country.
Shin goes from head of his class at a world renowned aviation school dating the beautiful daughter of an airline president to a mercenary fighter pilot bound to Area 88 by a three-year contract that he was duped into signing by a jealous and competitive childhood friend. Determined to earn $1.5 million dollars to buy his way out of the obligation and return home, killing becomes second nature to Shin as he quickly rises to the top rank at Area 88.
Overwrought with shame and self-loathing for what he has become, Shin begins to question whether he is still fighting for survival, or like his fellow mercenaries, for the sheer excitement and camaraderie of battle.
