OK, ok…In his quest to impress Death by killing off all life in all universes, Thanos seeks the Infinity Gems (Adam Warlock’s Soul Gem is 1 of 6). This quest leads Thanos (The Mad Titan) into direct opposition with the entire complement of Marvel heroes, gods, titans, civilizations, etc…More than once.

The protagonist of Sandman is Dream, the immortal anthropomorphic personification of dreams and story telling. He is known by an array of names, most often Morpheus, but also Oneiros, Lord Shaper, Lord Kai’ckul, the Prince of Stories, the Carrion King, and, rarely, “The Sandman”. He is one of a family of seven siblings known as the Endless, each of whom personifies some aspect of reality, such as Death or Desire.

Gaiman has summarized the plot of the series (in the foreword to Endless Nights) as: “The king of dreams learns one must change or die and then makes his decision.” The character’s initially haughty, and often cruel, manner begins to soften after his years of imprisonment at the start of the series, but the challenge of undoing past sins and changing old ways is an enormous one for a being who has been set in his ways for billions of years.

Growing up in 17th century Sengoku era Japan, Shinmen Takezou is shunned by the local villagers as a devil child due to his wild and violent nature.
Running away from home with a fellow boy at age 17, Takezou joins the Toyotomi army to fight the Tokugawa clan at the battle of Sekigahara.
However, the Tokugawa win a crushing victory, leading to nearly three hundred years of Shogunate rule.
Takezou and his friend manage to survive the battle, and afterwards swear to do great things with their lives.
But after their paths seperate, Takezou becomes a wanted criminal, and must change his name and his nature in order to escape an ignoble death.

Based on the book Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, Vagabond is a fictional retelling of the life of Miyamoto Mushashi, often referred to as the “Sword Saint” - perhaps the most famous and successful of Japan’s sword fighters.

The samurai epic is a staple genre in the Manga universe, varying from the extreme violence of the ‘Lone Wolf and Cub’ series through to the animalistic spin of Usagi Yojimbo. Somewhere in this mix sits Hiroaki Samura’s opus, Blade of the Immortal. Samura himself says when he set out to write Blade, he wanted a more realistic and harsh environment for his characters to populate. Hence the reader is thrown headlong into the seedy underbelly of Shogunate Japan.
The protagonist, Manji, is a ronin, a masterless samurai with a price on his head. He’s a man on the run and has killed a hundred men while trying to escape the clutches of the law, the last one being his brother-in-law. Somehow he bumps into an old lady who infects him with blood worms, worms that are able to knit together damaged flesh.
Thus the man who wants to die and be released is made immortal, his only way to salvation is to kill a thousand wrong-doers. On completion of this task he’ll be given the cure to the worms and be able to die.

(Won Japan’s 1998 Media Art Award and the Will Eisner Comics Industry Award.)
