post Frank Miller - Ronin

August 30th, 2006

Ronin was a six-issue mini series first published by DC from 1983 to 1984. With Ronin, Miller not only refined his own art and storytelling techniques, but also helped change how creator rights were viewed, and proved that comics in new formats could be commercially viable. Ronin was also his most clearly manga-influenced title, drawing mainly from the black and white Lone Wolf and Cub series. From Wikipedia.

post Maverick (Marvel)

August 27th, 2006

And again, thanks to unangst for these :D

David North (birth name Christoph Nord) is a mutant comic book character in the fictional Marvel Universe. He is known as both Maverick and Agent Zero. North first appeared in X-Men (vol. 2) #5 and was created by Jim Lee.

David North, a former German Freedom Fighter known as Maverick, was the former partner of Wolverine, Sabretooth, Mastodon, John Wraith, and Silver Fox when they were all C.I.A. agents. This mysterious mutant has the ability to see all of the various immediate futures of his enemies. This allows him to choose a different course of action, always making him the victor.

Maverick possesses the mutant ability to absorb kinetic impact within certain limits without injury to himself. He wears body armor and wields large guns. His aging process has been greatly slowed by an “age suppression factor.” In recent times Maverick had been suffering from the debilitating final stages of the Legacy Virus infection. Maverick “died” with the mutant telepath Elena Ivanova at his side.

Ivanova proceeded to perform C.P.R. on Maverick and use her mutant psionic powers to tap into his mind and coax Maverick back to life. The process proved exceptionally effective, because when she brought back Maverick, she also brought back his lost powers. In fact, they were brought back with such a great force that the explosion sent Ivanova flying across the room. Fortunately she was not harmed and Maverick’s Legacy Virus seems to have gone into a type of remission.

Maverick then learned that his powers had mutated, so while he can still absorb kinetic impacts, his body now needs to release the stored energy. He also discovered that he could re-channel that absorbed energy out through his hands. This power can even be used to deliver a devastating punch that hits with ten times the force of a normal punch. Since the “remission” of the Legacy Virus, the telltale scars that usually accompany the virus have healed on Maverick’s face.

post Excalibur v3 (Marvel Comics)

August 27th, 2006

Filed under: Comics, Jake Chambers, Marvel — Jake Chambers @ 8:32 am

Well, this is actually the only Excalibur series I read. And I read only the House of M issues  But I enjoyed it. It was nice to see Xavier and Magneto on one side. Really. So, here is the third installment of Excalibur.

In 2004, Marvel Comics launched a new ongoing series titled Excalibur, this time dealing with the efforts of Professor Xavier and Magneto to rebuild the devastated mutant nation of Genosha (which was destroyed at the beginning of Grant Morrison’s X-Men run). Aside from the name and the writer (Claremont) it has no connection to Marvel’s previous Excalibur titles.

Other cast members included Callisto, another mutant leader and former member of the Morlocks, and newcomers such as Wicked, Freakshow, Shola Inkosi, and Karima Shapandar. Archangel and Husk also appeared in the series. The grouping never laid claim to the name Excalibur, despite the title of the series. The series’ last issue was #14, released in May 2005. Events of the House of M storyline concluded Xavier’s and Magneto’s partnership.
