Fables (issues 1 to 50) June 26, 2006

Fables is a Vertigo comic book series created and written by Bill Willingham. It takes place in a continuity of its own, and is unrelated to the larger DC Comics continuity. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore who have been forced out of their native lands by a mysterious enemy known as the Adversary. They travel to our world and form a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Characters from fables with non-human appearance must live at the “Farm” in upstate New York.
Willingham reinterpreted many of the characters, evident in the divorce of Snow White and Prince Charming due to infidelity on the part of the latter. The former was deputy mayor of Fabletown as the series begins. Another principal character is the Big Bad Wolf, who has not only reformed, but gained the ability to take on human appearance and serves as Fabletown’s sheriff at the series beginning.
Earlier story arcs each take on the form of a different genre: the first is a murder mystery, the next a conspiracy thriller, and then a caper story.
Various artists have worked on the title. The covers are done by James Jean. The majority of the interior work has been done by Mark Buckingham. Other artists include: Bryan Talbot, Lan Medina, P. Craig Russell, and Linda Medley.
Willingham recently announced a spin-off series, Jack of Fables, that will focus on Jack of the Tales (read on for more info). The series is co-written by former Clockwork Storybook author Matthew Sturges. Wikipedia

Excalibur June 15, 2006

Excalibur is a Marvel Comics superhero group, an offshoot of the X-Men, usually based in the United Kingdom. Conceived by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Alan
Davis, the original Excalibur first appeared in Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn (1987)
The first Excalibur consisted of the English superhero Captain Britain, his lover Meggan and several onetime members of the X-Men and related mutant teams. An eponymous series
featuring the team lasted from 1988 until 1998. Originally, it was a wacky series involving cross-dimensional travel that incorporated as many elements of Captain Britain’s mythos
as it did the X-Men’s. It became a more typical X-Book in later years.
Captain Britain recently reformed Excalibur to defend London in a series entitled New Excalibur, which debuted in 2005.

Ms. Marvel (V1 and V2) June 14, 2006

Carol Danvers is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. She first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968). Danvers’ superhero alias is currently Ms. Marvel; in the past she has also gone by the names Binary and Warbird.
Ms. Marvel has a wide array of superhuman powers. Initially they included superhuman strength, endurance, formidable resistance to physical injury, the ability to fly, and a precognitive sense. When she became Binary, she could manipulate every form of energy in the electromagnetic spectrum on a cosmic level, had vastly increased strength, and could fly at speeds exceeding light. After her link to the white hole from which she drew her powers was severed, she lost the bulk of her cosmic powers, but still retained her energy manipulation powers on a smaller scale. In addition to her original powers of superhuman strength, injury resistance, and flight, Ms. Marvel has the ability to absorb and manipulate photonic energy. She can focus her photonic powers into explosive blasts of radiant energy, which she fires from her fingertips. These blasts are comparable in power to her fellow Avenger Iron Man’s repulsor rays. By focusing her powers outward in all directions, she can surround herself with an energy aura which deflects most attacks. She also has some gravitational powers which allow her to boost her already tremendous strength by absorbing the gravitational forces around her. She has also demonstrated the ability to absorb other forms of energy, such as electricity, to further magnify her strength and energy projection. On at least one occasion, Binary was able to use her power to force open a Shi’ar Stargate, a feat which only hosts of the Phoenix Force and Firestar have managed before or since.
