Epic Illustrated May 26, 2006

Epic Illustrated was a bi-monthly large format anthology series published by Marvel Comics for 34 issues between 1980-1986. It allowed regular Marvel Comics writers and artists to try out material that was deemed unsuitable for titles still subject to the Comics Code and also stories using Marvel Universe characters that were risque or non-canon. Unlike the earlier Heavy Metal the majority of the material was newly commissioned. The title was edited by Archie Goodwin. Each issue usually featured a main story, a number of regular serials and short one offs by new artists. From Wikipedia

Batman - The Long Halloween
Thirteen issues Batman miniseries
(350+ pages)
DC Comics 1998
Writer-Jeph Loeb
Artist Tim Sale
Batman: The Long Halloween was a 13-issue comic book miniseries written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. It was inspired, in style at least, by the three Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Specials by the same creative team. The entire series has been collected in both a hardcover and trade paperback book form. Loeb and Sale have also created two sequel miniseries, Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome.
Plot Overview
The Long Halloween is heavily influenced by film noir and films such as The Godfather. The miniseries continues the story of Carmine Falcone introduced in Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. The series, set in the second and third year of Batman’s career, revolves around the gradual transition among his rogue’s gallery from simple mob goons to full-fledged supervillains. It is also a re-telling of the origin of Two-Face. The Long Halloween, along with Batman: The Man Who Falls, Batman: Year One, and various comics from the 1970s, all served as inspiration for the 2005 film release Batman Begins. The story has Batman, early in his career, taking on the mob and a serial killer who strikes on holidays. The story is drum tight through thirteen issues (350+ pages), set from Halloween to Halloween, with a poetic pacing and use of graphic tension found only in top-notch graphic novels. Harvey Dent is heavily featured along with a young Jim Gordon.
The usual rogue’s gallery weaves through the book, including a jealous Joker, out to outdo the serial killer, a cornered, yet elegantly neurotic Riddler, and a wildly abstracted, sensual Poison Ivy, along with a little more mind-altering mayhem from the Scarecrow and Mad Hatter.

A-Next May 19, 2006

A-Next is the Marvel Comics’ MC2 Universe version of the Avengers. The team made its first appearance in What If? #105, the first comics featuring Spider-Girl, and its origin story was told in A-Next #1, cover dated October 1998. The comics lasted twelve monthly issues, all written by Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz.
The first story paid homage to the original Avengers #1, with an Asgardian menace prompting new superheroes to band together, all of them analogues to the original team. Future stories introduced new heroes and menaces, many of them clearly based on pre-existing Marvel characters. Although the stories tried to capture the epic scope of the original Avengers stories, Ron Frenz’s retro artwork and the stories dated simplicity made the comics unpalatable to younger or older readers. Characters and story elements created by DeFalco for other comics were used extensively throughout the 12-issue run.
