Y: The Last Man April 11, 2006

Y: The Last Man was dreamed up by a guy, and the lead protgonist is a guy. But in many ways, Y is a thoroughly feminist piece of work. It both points out how far we’ve come in terms of gender equality, and spotlights how much further we have to go. But as much as it focuses on women and their role in the world, Y also dwells on the symbiosis of man and woman, how the human race is a delicate house of cards that can easily come tumbling down… perhaps as the result of its own genius and divisiveness.

Yorick Brown is out of work, living in Manhattan and manages to get by with his occasional street magic performances. His girlfriend is in the middle of the freakin’ Australian outback, and he misses her like crazy. His mom’s a congresswoman, his sister’s an EMT name Hero, and his dad’s a literature professor with a penchant for giving his kids weird names. Though he has his quirks, Yorick’s a regular guy… a regular guy who’s about to become the center of attention on the entire planet.

Guerra’s art reminds me of Jose Luis (Deadman) Garcia Lopez’s work and that of Frank (Liberty Meadows) Cho. His has a clear, simple style that’s nevertheless realistic, which suits the realistic tone of this bizarre story about social structure. I find his stuff’s a little loose, though. The nature of the story calls for a little more realism, and a darker tone as well. That’s just a personal preference, I suppose, though. Overall, he tells the story clearly and differentiates among the various female characters nicely.

Vaughan has crafted a believable character in Yorick, one to whom it is easy to relate. He may be off the wall when it comes to his interests and “projects,” for lack of a better term, but he’s at heart a thoroughly down-to-earth, normal guy. Of course, Vaughan doesn’t stop there. He introduces a wide and varied supporting cast — comprised of women, of course. Before delving into the insanity these characters are about to face, he eases us into their lives, from the mundane to the dramatic.

Vaughan promises to explore some fascinating intellectual territory in this series. Can social structures throughout the world withstand the loss of an entire gender? Would mankind adapt? Wither away and die? Maybe even thrive? But there’s more to it than that. The ethics of cutting-edge science are at the forefront of the story as well, as will be, I imagine, a conflict between the emotional and ecological sides of sexuality.
